Auguster "Gus" Speight, Jr.

June 29, 1955 — May 25, 2018

Auguster “Gus” Speight, Jr., 62, of Worcester passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, May 25, 2018 after battle with cancer.  His loving wife of forty-four years, Estella (Bush) Speight, predeceased him this past December.
Auguster was born and raised in Panola, Alabama, one of 15 children of Auguster and Lillie (Stanton) Speight.  He married Estella in 1973 and together moved to Worcester in 1974.  Auguster was employed as a Waste Water Treatment Operator for Interplex Engineered Products,
and had been employed at Allegro for thirty-eight year, prior to working at Interplex.
 
Auguster is survived by four children, Remond Speight, Auguster Speight III and his fiancée Jill Panarelli all of Worcester, Shanee Moore and her husband Samuel of Macomb, Michigan, and Sydrick Speight and his wife Angela of Millbury; 19 grandchildren, Remond Speight, Jr., Akeyla, Tristchion, Brianna, Daija, Jaiden, Camren, Jaxson, and  Auguster Speight V, Alana, Deyvn, and Trey Moore, Sinclair Rodriguez, Destinee Lucier, Zackery King, Chelsea Madera, Ariana Oskirko, and Dekedras Wright, Jr.;  three great grandchildren; Thirteen siblings, Emmitt Speight, Charles Speight and his fiancé’ Lorri Hargrove all of Marietta, GA, Maggie McClellan, Lonnie Speight and his wife Sandra, Katherine Bush and her husband Alfred, Donnie Speight, Robert Speight and his wife Sharon and Brother in law Onslow James all of Worcester MA, Evoine Beasley and her husband Jimmy, Curtis Speight and his wife Chittaphone all of Millbury, Latrice Cheney and her husband Steven, Nathaniel Speight and his wife Jennifer all of Oxford, Douglas Speight and his wife Nancy of Kennesaw, GA, and Carl Speight and his wife Lindsey of Uxbridge;  many in-laws, nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. His son, Eugene Speight, grandson, Auguster IV, sister, Queen James and brother in law, Robert McClellan, all pre-deceased him.

Auguster was the patriarch and backbone of his family. He believed that family came first and always put their needs ahead of his own. He took extreme pride in his wife, children and grandchildren. Gus was passionate about his job, playing cards, barbequing, and fishing on Cape Cod. He took solace in gardening with his wife and spending time with his siblings. They were inseparable and happiest together surrounded by family. His unwavering faith and dedication to his family kept him grounded and helped him through life’s challenges. Gus truly believed “It’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” and he lived life to the fullest. He will live on through the hearts of his family and we take comfort knowing that he and his wife and soulmate are together again.  

Calling Hours for Auguster will be on Friday, June 1, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester.  His Funeral Service will be on Saturday, June 2, at 10 a.m. in Belmont A.M.E. Zion Church, 55 Illinois Street, Worcester; the Reverend Gregory Wilder, officiating.  Interment beside his beloved wife will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
