Bertha (Herelis) Salem, 97 of Coral Springs, Florida formerly of Auburn and Worcester, passed away with loved ones by her side Thursday, September 9, 2021.
Bertha was born July 28th, 1924, the daughter of Grecian immigrants Steven and Mary (Karis) Herelis. Raised in Worcester, she lived and worked here and in Auburn before moving to Florida to be closer to family. In 1946, Bertha married the man who became the “Love of her life” for over 59 years, Edward M. “Pat” Salem and lived with, love, devotion and family before Ed left her side in 2005.
Bertha and Edward together founded, nurtured, and guided Hawthorne Sportswear company for over 35 years before retiring.
Bertha is survived by son, Steven E. Salem and his wife Dawn of Coral Springs, Fl; Granddaughter Rowan, her wife Alex and their son and Bertha’s great grandson, Logan; a grandson Michael; sister; Mary Kopsiaftis; niece Kristine and nephew Kenneth, extended family, and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, a brother, John Kouvaros also predeceased her.
She was a member of St George Orthodox Cathedral and at one time a member and active volunteer of its Women’s Club. Bertha loved to cook traditional Greek & Syrian foods to share with her son and his family especially during the holidays where she was always (The Bell of The Ball) as she led the family around the room dancing to Greek music. Bertha will be deeply missed by all.
A Graveside service will be held Wednesday, September 22nd at 11:30 am in Hope Cemetery, 119 Webster St. section 105. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in her name can be made to the St George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St. Worcester 01604. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
