Carol (DeGaetano) Mastrogiovanni

November 21, 1944 — October 29, 2021

Carol R. (DeGaetano) Mastrogiovanni, 76, a longtime resident of Shrewsbury, passed away suddenly surrounded by her family on Friday, October 29th, 2021.

Born in Worcester, Carol was the daughter of John and Alice (Ferro) DeGaetano.  Raised in Shrewsbury, she graduated from Shrewsbury High School as a member of the Class of 1962. Carol started her career as a medical transcriber at City Hospital before taking time to raise her children.  Later she worked for the Town of Shrewsbury and was active in the schools before returning to the medical field. She was a medical secretary for many years in the Hematology/Oncology Department and Surgical Clinic a UMass Medical.  Carol then went on to become an administrative assistant for the Emergency Department at UMass Memorial Healthcare before retiring.

Carol is survived by her loving children, Carolyn M. Sherman, her husband Joseph and their children, Jonathan and Michaella, Pamela L. LeBlanc, her husband Marc and their children Matthew and Jordan all of Shrewsbury, and Peter A. Mastrogiovanni, Jr. of Worcester; a sister, Mary A. Burgess, and her husband Stephen of Shrewsbury; many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.  She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph F. DeGaetano.

In Carol’s life, her family always came first.  She was the backbone and matriarch of her family and remained devoted to them all.  She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life; spending time with family and friends, attending her children and grandchildren’s activities, the holidays when they could all be together, playing scrabble, catching up with her friends over dinner at La Cucina, and was an active member of the SHS Reunion Committee for many years.  Carol enjoyed watching the Red Sox and New England Patriots while sharing her commentary of plays with daughters and son in-laws. She looked forward to traveling, and visiting the beaches of Maine, Rhode Island and notably Cape Cod.   Carol truly believed that faith, family, and friends were the most important parts of life. Her heart was as big as her smile; warm and welcoming and full of love.  Carol’s unwavering faith in life kept her grounded through all life’s challenges.   Carol’s passing leaves a hole in our hearts but her loving and caring soul will not be forgotten.

Her family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at UMass Memorial/Pulmonary, especially Habib, Liz, Grace, Jim, and Danielle for their care and compassion.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2021, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St.  Her funeral will be held Thursday, November 4th from the funeral home with a procession beginning at noon to St Mary’s Church, 640 Main St where her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 pm.  Burial will follow in Mt View Cemetery.
