Charles Simpson Duffer, Jr, 77, of Boylston, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at the Oakdale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Boylston, surrounded by his loving family. He is reunited in Heaven with his daughter, Julie Roberta Kathryn Duffer, who passed away in 2011.
Charles is survived by the love of his life, his wife of over fifty years, Joan (Carey) Duffer; two sons, Robert J. Duffer of Missoula, Montana, and Ralph A. Duffer of Boylston; two grandchildren, Jessica and Abigail; two great-grandchildren, Marissa and Brianna; nieces and nephews. Along with the loss of he shares with Joan, of their daughter, he was also predeceased by his sister, Pat Peacock. Charles was born in Dorchester, son of the late, Charles S. and Roberta (Dostie) Duffer. He grew up in Waltham and graduated from Waltham High School, before serving his nation proudly in the United States Navy, during the Vietnam Conflict, as a Seabee.
Charles co-owned Quarter’s Hardware in Woburn for many years, before retiring in 2008. He had previously worked as a carpenter with the Capenter’s Union. They were residing in Andover and after several years Charles and Joan moved to Arizona, where he joined a bike group and pedaled thousands of miles throughout the state, it was there that he also enjoyed hiking. He and Joan also enjoyed traveling the world, especially on cruises. Massachusetts was in their DNA, so they returned here, settling in Boylston, where they enjoyed making many new friends.
Calling Hours will be on Wednesday, August 28, from 10:30 am until a Prayer Service begins at 12 noon in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester; services will conclude with Military Funeral Honors.
