Chester H. Brigham “Chet”, 80, of Holden, formerly of West Boylston, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones, Tuesday, December 28th, 2021, after a period of declining health.
Chester was born in Worcester, raised in West Boylston, the son of Chester F. and Grace N. (Crowe) Brigham. He graduated from West Boylston High School class of 1959, then enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. Upon discharge from the service, Chester, embarked on a career as a route truck driver for many years working for the Neles-Jamesbury Corporation before retiring and focusing on being a community activist.
Chester is survived by four children, Chester L. Brigham, Steven W. Brigham and his wife Kathleen all of West Boylston, Derek F. Brigham and his wife Tracy of Auburn, Allison (Brigham) Bouthiller and her husband Michael of Worcester; eight grandchildren, Danny, Steven, Cameron, Audrey, Louis, Elizabeth, Derek J and Mason; three stepchildren he treated as his own, Jamie, Brian and Matthew; three great grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Bostek and her husband Joseph of West Boylston; a brother Michael Brigham in North Carolina; his beloved bulldog and best friend Bentley along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends. His son, Jesse Lee Brigham and sister Lisa (Brigham) Canterbury predeceased him.
Chet was a recovering alcoholic and sober since 1984. He was a dedicated activist for people in recovery, and a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, sponsoring hundreds through recovery and life’s challenges. He owned and operated a three-family home to assist those making the transition to sobriety. He was also a longtime member and volunteer of the West Boylston Post 204 American Legion serving as legion baseball manager for many years. Chet, as told by many of his friends and coworkers, was always there to help when and where he could. He faced life’s obstacles with determination, strength and always with an excellent sense of humor. He will forever be missed by the many he helped and counseled through the years. His stories, jokes and quick wit will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A period of calling hours will be held Wednesday, January 5th from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, followed by a prayer service in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Burial next to his son, Jesse will follow in Mt Vernon Cemetery.
