Cleo L. McDonald, of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the age of 91. Born and raised in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, to Cleo (Leo) and Appoline Joly McDonald, Cleo was the second youngest of nine children.
He was well known for being a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather who travelled often to be with family no matter where they were. Cleo was also an incredibly talented bowler, and a kind and loving friend to many in the local area. What was not well known was that Cleo had a fascinating career at the forefront of technology during a crucial time in America’s history, of which he was quite humble. Upon graduation from Northbridge High School in 1951, Cleo enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a communications and electronics engineer. His keen intellect, commitment to service, and leadership abilities made Cleo a perfect candidate for his many Strategic Air Command assignments at key national defense, Cold War era installations worldwide. His technical abilities in communications electronics, avionics, radar imagery components, and complex aircraft gunnery systems and trainers made Cleo a valued asset to the U.S. Air Force and our nation’s defense. His commitment to service during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts at the height of the Cold War was a testament to his patriotism, honor, and fidelity, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.
Cleo is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Paula Renee Rasch and Mr. Ron Rasch of Moore, Oklahoma; Keli Anne Daniels and U.S. Army Colonel (Retired) Kevin Daniels of Stafford, Virginia; his grandchildren, Shane Rasch, his wife MaKenzie, and their two daughters, Breelyn and Lily; Nolan and Allison Daniels; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved.
Cleo will be buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery pending arrangements.
