David J. Friel, 82, a lifelong resident of Worcester, passed away with loved ones gathered at his side, Monday, December 2, 2024, after a period of declining health. David is welcomed in heaven into the arms of his daughter, Ellen Levesque, brothers, Edward and George and sister Maureen.
David was born in Worcester, December 11, 1941, the son of Edward and Helen (Shea) Friel. He was raised here and married the “Love of his life” Sheila A. Joyce on June 2, 1962. They settled in the Lincoln Street neighborhood of Worcester to raise their family with faith, and devotion.
David worked as a custodian for the City of Worcester school department, the majority of his years at Elm Park School before retiring. He previously worked for his brother in the office supply industry in Worcester.
David is survived by his love, wife and partner of 62 years, Sheila; three children, Mary B. Daniel and her husband James of Worcester, David M. Friel and his wife Marybeth of Rochester, N.Y., James E. Friel and his wife Joanne Halverson of Seatle Washington; nine grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Grampa”, Melissa, Kristen, Robert, Cameron, Francesca, Erica, Garrett and Brett; four great grandchildren Daemien, Lorelei, Ava, Rory and one soon to be great granddaughter. He additionally, leaves two sisters, Helen Friel and Patricia O’Connell and her husband Bruce all of Worcester; Nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
David was a member of Our Lady of Providence parish-St Bernard's church, and the Brown Square Civic Association. He was a avid New England Sports fan, enjoying watching the games on T.V. David and Sheila loved to travel, dance, cruises to warm destinations and the beach. A dedicated family man with a huge heart and kind way whose most memorable moments will be those spent with them.
Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours on David’s birthday, Wednesday, December 11th from 4 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be held Thursday, December 12th from the funeral home, departing in procession at 9:30 am to St Bernard’s Church, 228 Lincoln Street. Burial in St John Cemetery will be held privately. In lieu of flowers remembrances in his name can be made to the Activities Fund, care of Dodge Park Rest home, Randolph Road Worcester.
