David D. Haig, Jr., 89, of Shrewsbury, a long-time Pharmacist, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020, at UMass Hospital.
David is survived by his loving wife of thirty-nine years, Barbara (Tibbetts) Haig; a son, John Haig; a dear family friend, Sampson Asumadu, who David considered another son; nieces and nephews including his brother’s children, Ross J. Haig and Jean M. Haig. David was predeceased by a son, David Haig, III, and by his twin brother, Kenneth M. Haig. David was born in Worcester, son of the late David D. and Adele (Marcell) Haig. He graduated from North High School and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Northeastern University; and as a dedicated alum, he served on the National Council for Northeastern.
David and his brother Kenneth opened Haig & Haig Pharmacy in Worcester in 1951, both wanting to be successful, they became known by local physicians for be able to help out in a pinch with 24-hour service and home delivery when needed. David retired in 2009. He was a member of Saint Mary’s Church in Shrewsbury, the Worcester Ski Club, the Mount Snow Ski Resort’s Mountain Ambassadors, and a volunteer with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Calling Hours for David will be on Wednesday morning, December 23, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, followed by a procession to an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass at Saint Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
The use of face masks and social distancing will be required at the funeral home, church, and cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to a charity of choice.
