Delfina Bermudez, 92, of Worcester, passed away, peacefully in her sleep, on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Vero Health and Rehabilitation Center in Worcester.
Delfina is survived by her loving family, including, Juan J. Velez and his wife Stephanie of Millbury; four daughters, Blanca Haydee of Bayamon, PR; Ada N. Fulgham and her husband David of Worcester; Iris R. Arnal and partner Jorge Fonseca of Worcester, and Mary Ann Rodriguez and her husband Santos of Spring Hill, FL; a step-daughter, Migna Bermudez of Worcester; eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a great-great grandson; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Luis “Tony” A. Velez in August 2003. Delfina was born in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, daughter of the late, Ramón and Antonia (Gonzalez) Sepulveda.
Delfina moved her family from Puerto Rico to Worcester in January 1972, arriving the day of a Nor’easter. She settled her family in the shadow of Saint Paul’s Cathedral, where she prayed daily between working and providing the best for her children. With the grace of God, Delfina was able to open “Rincon Criollo”, the first Spanish restaurant in Worcester, while still working at La Casa de Communidad. She later studied at Quinsigamond Community College earning a GED and later an associate’s degree. She later worked as a dietician at the former Worcester City Hospital, before retiring.
Delfina loved her family and did everything in her power to provide them with a loving home and great education. She loved cooking and gathering her family around the table to nourish them with great food and love. She enjoyed puzzles, playing dominos, billiards, and enjoyed writing poetry.
Calling Hours for Delfina will be on Wednesday, April 14, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Her Funeral will be on Thursday, April 15, from the funeral home, departing at 9:30 a.m. in procession for a 10 a.m. Mass at Saint Paul’s Cathedral, 15 Chatham Street, Worcester. Interment will follow at Saint John’s Cemetery, Worcester.
