Derek E. Barton, 51, of Worcester, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at UMass Hospital in Worcester. His father, Deacon John N. Barton, predeceased him in February.
Derek is survived by his son, William George Barton; his mother, Donna M. (Symonowicz) Barton; his girlfriend, Kerry McCormack; aunts Leigh Barton and Michelle Hess; and many cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Edwin and Helen Symonowicz; his uncle, Michael Symonowicz; and by an aunt, Laura Barton. Derek was born in Worcester and has lived here all his life. He graduated from Saint Peter Marian High School and attended Quinsigamond Community College, and the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council in Boylston.
Derek was recently promoted to Director of Security at Allied Universal Security. He was a member of Saint Christopher Church. He was a FIFA Soccer Referee with his dad and was a youth soccer coach with Wachusett Your Soccer, and with the Olympic Development Program. He loved Disney and attending Comicon events where he could immerse himself in Star Wars and Star Trek.
Everyone who knew Derek was aware of what a wonderful, dedicated and caring father he was to William, often referring to him as his pride and joy. His larger than life presence matched his witty - and often sarcastic - sense of humor. His friends all knew him as hard working, funny and easy going. He cared about everyone and everything he came in contact with.
Derek's family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at UMASS Memorial University Hospital ICU2 team including Muhammad Ramzan, MD, Dr. William Lambert, and nurses Becky and Terri for their exceptional care.
Calling Hours will be on Friday, October 14, from 8 a.m. until his Funeral Mass begins at 10 a.m. in Saint Christopher Church, West Boylston Street, Worcester.
The family has entrusted Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel.
