Dorothy (Dot) Mahoney, 95, of Worcester, MA, died Sunday, September 18, 2022, at Christopher House, surrounded by her family and loved ones. Dot was born on June 10, 1927, to Aaron and Lillian Barrette in their triple-decker home on Paine Street in Worcester. During her childhood, Dot lived in many neighborhoods around the city and graduated from Commerce High School in 1945. While attending Commerce High, she served as a dedicated member and president of the Beta Chi sorority.
Dot married John (Dan) Mahoney in September 1954. The two met while playing on their company bowling team for Rockwood Sprinklers, where Dot was an executive secretary. Dot excelled as an executive secretary for several Worcester-area businesses, including Woodbury Letterhead, Salisbury Associates, CCI Travel Agency, and Group Benefits Strategies, before retiring in 1993.
Dot is survived by her daughter Karen Zingarelli, her three granddaughters, Kathryn Zingarelli, Lauren Zingarelli and her husband Kevin Stanislawzyk, and Jillian Zincari and her wife Marie. Dot had three great-grandchildren, Levon and Eydie Stanislawzyk and Nora Zincari. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John, who passed away in 2015 after 61 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her sister Shirley Betz, brother John Barrett and son-in-law Maurice Zingarelli.
Family was everything to Dot. She often called herself the “luckiest person in the world” to be loved and cared for by so many. Among those she valued so much were the members of her extended Mahoney family - especially Billy and Ellen - as well as her dear friends Ann O’Brien, Ann Mosier, and Dorothy “Ducky” Rheau, and the many neighbors and caretakers whom she considered family. Dot was positive and gracious, smart and strong, and she stood by her convictions. She could turn a phrase and make you laugh out loud. In many ways she was beyond her time, and she’d be the first to say so!
