Dorothy Isabel Mapes, was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on July 31, 1929 daughter of the late, George and Edith Petrie; and lived in Ware for many years. Dorothy passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2020. She graduated from Northfield School for Girls in 1947, and later graduated from Bridgewater State College, now University, in 1951.
Dorothy taught school for twelve years before becoming Library Director of the Young Men’s Library in Ware, retiring after thirty years of dedicated service. Following their retirements, Dorothy and her husband Tom moved to Quail Run Estates in Agawam, where they were “adopted” by the managers, Jack and Jeanine Penney, and moved with them to Feeding Hills, MA.
Her beloved Tom passed away in 2003; she moved with her adopted family, to Calabash, NC in 2007, where she enjoyed living with them and being a part of their family. Dorothy enjoyed knitting, the Boston Red Sox, the fresh “crack” when opening a new book, light houses along the coast of Maine, and being with dear friends, including Jack and Jeanine in Calabash, NC, as well as Michael and Diane Penney of Sterling and all their extended families.
Due to current restrictions on public gatherings, services will be held privately. She will be laid to rest beside her loving husband, Tom, at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Ware.
