Ernest A. Lajoie, 93, a lifelong resident of Worcester, passed away with loved ones at his side, Sunday, October 8th, 2023. He’s welcomed into heaven and the arms of his love and wife Bernadette.
Ernie was born in Worcester, November 10, 1929, the son of French-Canadian immigrants, Origene and Octavie (Boisvert) Lajoie. Raised here he graduated from St Joseph’s Elementary School and Worcester Boys Trade. Ernie then married the “Love of his life” Bernadette L. Duquette, they spent the next 50 years devoted to each other until Bernadette left his side, in March of 2021. He spent the 3 years longing to be by her side once more.
Ernie worked in maintenance and construction all his life until 1994 when he retired. He worked for various builders and maintenance companies including Zickell Builders, Worcester City Hospital, and the bulk of his years for the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, earning employee honors before retiring in 1994 after 16 years.
Ernie is survived by two brothers, Roland Lajoie of Worcester, and Normand Lajoie, in Florida; Nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, notably Jack Foley and Beth Sannella who cared for him and Bernadette in their retirement. In addition to his wife, Bernadette, and parents, two brothers, Paul and Gerald Lajoie and a sister, Madeline Marchand, all predeceased him.
Ernest was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. He enjoyed, painting, photography, crossword puzzles, and reading. Ernie was an avid, enthusiastic Civil War Buff who read and watched everything he could about our history. He had a special talent as a carpenter, who was dedicated to helping his neighbors, friends or anyone who needed a hand. Ernie had a huge heart , gentile way, and bright smile.
A period of calling hours will be held Saturday, October 14th from 9:15 to 10:00 am follow by his funeral Mass at 10:00 in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St. Burial together with Bernadette will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his name can be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St is honored to serve the family once more.
