Esperanza Marchalewicz, 78, of Worcester Massachusetts passed away on January 22, 2021 after many years of Alzheimer’s Disease and then battling COVID-19.
Esperanza was born on December 18, 1942 in Nicaragua. She grew up in Costa Rica where she met her husband, John Marchalewicz, who preceded her in death in 1988. As a young adult, Esperanza worked in the hotel industry cooking and that is where she met her retired World War II veteran husband; the pair bonded over their passion for cooking as he was a chef in the military. After marriage and starting a family, they moved to Worcester, Massachusetts where she lived for 42 years.
Esperanza dedicated her love and life to her family and embraced every moment with them. She will always be remembered for her infectious smile, excellent cooking, sewing skills, and kind heart. She loved traveling to her winter home in Costa Rica, visiting family, drinking the freshest cup of coffee and feeding exotic birds pineapple from her windowsill.
She is survived by her 4 children: Argelia Manotas of Worcester; Karol Lebrun of Spencer; John Marchalewicz of Worcester; and Jack Marchalewicz of Holden, 3 brothers, 1 sister, 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and other family and friends.
Esperanza is preceded in death by her parents, Pablo Chavarria and Theod Teodora Gutierrez and her siblings Clemencia de la Concepcion, Julio, and Carmen.
Friends are invited to a period of calling hours Thursday, January 28th from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St before departing in procession to St. Paul Cathedral, 15 Chatham St., where her celebration of Christian burial mass will be held at 1:00pm. Mass COVID restrictions, masks and social distancing are required in the funeral home, church and at cemetery. Burial will take place on Monday, February 1st for 1:30pm at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Borne, MA.
