Eugene “Gene” Hickey, 86 of Worcester, passed away peacefully Friday, March 18th 2022 after a period of declining health.
Gene was born in Brookfield, July 20, 1935, one of six children of John and Esther (Green) Hickey. Gene grew up and was educated in Brookfield and worked in his early years for a rubber manufacturing company, before accepting a position with Holy Cross College where he worked for over 22 years before retiring.
Gene is survived by his best friend and partner, Jerry Melanson who he shared the past 53 years with; his landlord and friend Steve Levine; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents three brothers, John, Norman, and Vincent Hickey, and two sisters, Verna Farraher and Avis Tretheway all predeceased him.
A simple, generous man, Gene loved the beach, dining out, notably to a pub or piano bar. He was neat as a pin, well dressed whenever he went out. Gene was generous, with a huge heart and big bright smile and a fantastic sense of humor.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 11 am in Westridge Cemetery, Charlton. There are no calling hours. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St is honored to assist the family with arrangements. Memorial remembrances in his name can be made to The Jewish Healthcare Hospice, 646 Salisbury Street, Worcester.
The Hickey family would like to thank the Knollwood Nursing Home, staff especially head nurse Joanne , CAN’s, Eric and George, as well as the Jewish Hospice for their devoted care they provided Gene.
