Gerald Sherman

August 5, 1931 — August 31, 2018

Gerald Sherman, 87, of Cherry Valley, passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018 at the VA Medical Center in Brockton, after a long illness.

Gerald is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Joanne (DeSalvio) Sherman; a son, Jonathan Sherman of Cherry Valley; two daughters, Janet Buckley of Leicester and Cheryl Ann Knapton of Auburn; six grandchildren, Katelyn, Jennifer, Jessica, Matthew, Nicole, and Angela; nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brother, Ernest Sherman, Jr.  Gerald was born in Worcester, son of the late Ernest and Selma Rose (Morrison) Sherman.  He graduated from Boy’s Trade High School and then served his nation proudly in the United States Navy, during the Korean Conflict.

Gerald worked as a tile mason for Kesseli and Morse, retiring as a foreman. He also held a job that anyone who has visited an ice arena wants, he was the Zamboni driver at the Worcester Arena, retiring from that job when the arena closed.  He also ran his own business, Master Gardeners, with his son, Jonathan for many years.

Gerald was a motorcycle and small aircraft enthusiast.  He was private pilot and travelled extensively with his wife, flying themselves around the country.  He was a member of the Relic Riders Motorcycle Group and in 1953 won the Massachusetts Endurance Award for a Motorcycle Rider; and was the only person to beat Nate Sheldon of Sheldon’s Harley Davidson.
