Gia Mia Celularo, 57, of Worcester, passed away unexpectedly February 7th, 2024, after a series of health challenges.
Gia was born and raised in Worcester, one of two daughters of James and Beverly (Hietala) Celularo. Gia graduated from St Peter-Marian, a standout athlete in both softball and basketball. She helped SPM to a state title in basketball as a freshman in 1981 and in softball as a senior in 1984. Her four-year high school records were astonishing at 72-18 in basketball and 86-2 in softball. Gia scored over 1,000 points in basketball and was 21-1 as a pitcher in softball her senior year. She also earned the T&G all-star honors 5 times during her high school career.
Gia attended Allegheny College. She continued to play softball and helped Allegheny go to 4 Division III College World Series. Gia was named an All-American student athlete 3 times while in college. She is inducted in both the St. Peter-Marian and Allegheny College Hall of Fame.
Gia also played for the famous Raybestos Brakette’s in Stratford ,Connecticut. She won a gold medal in the 1989 Olympic festival in Oklahoma. She then tried out for the U.S. Olympic Softball team making it to the final cut. Gia had a love for all animals, and most especially, dogs.
Gia was predeceased by her father James Celularo, her mother Beverly (Hietala) Celularo and her sister Trina Celularo. She is survived by her best friend and pet dog Benjamin; Aunts Irene (Celularo) Eucer, Eva (Celularo) Kiley, Delores (Celularo) Norrman, Uncle Raymond Celularo and his wife Betty. She is also survived by many family members who loved her.
A period of calling hours will be held Friday, February 16th from 4 pm to 6 pm followed by a prayer service in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Burial with her parents and sister will be private. Memorial remembrances in her name can be made to the Second chance animal shelter, 831 Main St. Worcester, MA 01608.
