Irene (Nelson) Cariglia

Irene E. (Nelson) Cariglia, 85, of Worcester, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, Saturday, January 19, 2019.

Born and raised in Worcester, Irene was one of five children of Carl G. and Elizabeth (Travers) Nelson.  In 1953, Irene married Anthony P. Cariglia and for the next 29 years, raised their children with love and family until 1982 when Anthony passed away.  Irene continued to be the matriarch of her family, cherishing the special moments she could be with her family especially her grandchildren. They were her life’s inspiration and so proud to have them around her.  Irene worked many years as an insurance trainer for the Paul Revere/Unum Insurance company before retiring. 

Irene is survived by her five children, David Cariglia and his wife Kristen of Holden, Elizabeth Smith and her husband Rocky of N. Oxford, Karen Cariglia, of Paxton, Daniel Cariglia and his wife Anne of Princeton, and Andrew Cariglia of  West Boylston; six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Julie, Anthony, James, Madeline and Anthony; a great grandson Damian; Many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.  Besides her husband Anthony, two brothers, Herbert and Carl Nelson, and two sisters, Ruth Somers and Lois Petit all pre-deceased her. 

She was a member of St George’s Church.  An active member of the YMCA, Irene enjoyed talking with friends and swimming at least three times a week.  She also enjoyed reading, knitting, the computer and visiting her sister in Rockport. 

Funeral services and burial in Notre Dame Cemetery are private. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in her name can be made to St Jude Children’s research hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn.  The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St is honored to be directing arrangements.
