Joan M. (Sullivan) Hickey, 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 13th at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, in the presence of her loving children.
She was born in Worcester, the daughter of the late William F. and Mary (McPartland) Sullivan. Joan graduated from St. Peter’s High School, class of 1957, and Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Worcester City Hospital, where she met her beloved husband. Joan continued her career with Family Health Center of Worcester until her retirement.
Joan was a faithful member of St. Bernard’s Parish where she was a parishioner for over 40 years, giving her time to support various church activities including their Medical Clinic. Joan was an active member of the Guild of Our Lady of Providence and the Worcester City Hospital Alumni Association and was also a member of the Ladies’ Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Joan loved attending the theater, traveling and time spent with her five treasured grandchildren. She greatly enjoyed spending time at the Worcester Senior Center and with her many friends including “The Tribe”, a cherished group of best friends since the 1st grade.
Joan’s husband, Dennis F. Hickey passed away in 1991. She is survived by her son, Michael F. Hickey and his wife, Kate McEvoy; her daughter, Mary Harvey; her five cherished grandchildren: Michael, Maria, Patrick, Callie and Anna Harvey; a sister-in-law, Margaret Feeley and her husband Jack; and several dear nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers: William F. Sullivan, Jr, and Robert Sullivan and his wife Christine.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 17th at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Providence – St. Bernard’s Parish, 228 Lincoln Street, Worcester. An hour of calling will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 – 11:00 am at the church. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester.
