John F. Leahy, 74, of Worcester, passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Saint Vincent Hospital.
John is survived by cousins John V. Leahy and his wife Theresa of Auburn, Mark DiBenedetto of Brookfield, Rev. David Carr and Julie Carr, both of Delray Beach, FL, and Noreen Giammalvo and her husband Steven of Oviedo, FL. He was predeceased in 2014 by his beloved older brother, Joseph A. Leahy, Jr. He was also predeceased by cousins Mary Ellen Berg and Vincent DiBenedetto.
John was born in Worcester, son of the late Joseph A. Leahy, Sr. and Isabelle (Varaski) Leahy, and has called the city home throughout his life. A member of American Legion Post 288, John served in the United States Coast Guard before beginning a career of over 30 years as a Merchant Marine. He retired in the early 2000’s to help with the care of his mother. He was proudly devoted to his family and to Jake, his German Short Haired Pointer, to whom he referred with great sincerity as “the love of my life.” When John’s declining health rendered him unable to care for his dog, he selflessly saw to it that Jake found a new and loving home.
There are no calling hours. A Funeral Mass for John will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street, Worcester, MA. Please begin arriving at the church at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will follow at Notre Dame Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Worcester Animal Rescue League, 139 Holden Street, Worcester, MA 01606.
