John MacKoul, Local Developer and former President of MacKoul Electric, died on Sunday, November 17, 2019, in The Jewish Healthcare Center, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
John is survived by his wife, Gloria (Elliott) MacKoul and his beloved daughter, Jennifer MacKoul. He also leaves his sisters, Elinor Graves of Clinton and Mary Broderick of Shrewsbury; sisters in law, Paulette MacKoul of Millbury, Alice Carreau and Carol Elliott, both of Worcester; several aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, George MacKoul.
John was born in Worcester, son of the late Eli L. “E Louis” and Helen (Stachura) MacKoul. He grew up on Wall Street in the “Grafton Hill” section of Worcester; where he attended Grafton Street School and then graduated from Boy’s Trade High School.
John served in the Army National Guard, and obtained his Master Electrician’s License, becoming the youngest Master Electrician in the state. He and his brother George then founded MacKoul Electric.
John, along with his brother George and childhood friend Ken Perro, began building condominiums of the East Side of Worcester in 1983; and later with his friend Maurice Bailin began building single family homes and condominiums on the West Side of Worcester. Together they built “Rosewood Estates”, “Hidden Farm Estates”, and “Salisbury Hill”.
John’s favorite Holiday was Christmas and in 1988, John and Gloria built their “Dream Home” on Dolly Drive, which later became known as “The Christmas House”. Hundreds of people toured their home each night during The Christmas Season, sometimes waiting hours in line, to be greeted by “Frosty the Snowman” and “Rudolph”. Children got to see Santa Claus and were given candy canes and coloring books.
Gloria and Jennifer would like to thank the kind “angels” at The Jewish Healthcare Center, including the fifth floor Nurses, Nurses’ Aides, and their Hospice Staff. They are so grateful for their kindness and the compassionate care given to John during his illness.
