Joseph M. Fournier, 76, of Paxton, retired Lieutenant of the Worcester Fire Department, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at River Terrace Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Lancaster.
Joseph was born in Worcester, a son of the late Francis J. and Antoinette (Evangelista) Fournier. He graduated from North High School, Class of 1967 and later attended Quinsigamond Community College where he obtained his certification in the study of Fire Science. Joseph enlisted in the Massachusetts Air National Guard and served 8 years as a member of the 212th Engineering Installation Squadron.
Joseph was appointed to the Worcester Fire Department on January 2, 1972, serving the City of Worcester on Engine 2 and Aerial Scope 2 from 1972 to 1994. He was promoted to Lieutenant on February 20, 1994, and was assigned to Engine 8 until his retirement after 33 years in 2003. Joseph enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking and loved watching his granddaughter’s dance. In his younger years, Joseph raised pigeons and greyhounds.
He is survived by his loving family; a son Francis J. Fournier of Paxton with whom he lived, a daughter Nicole Fournier of Webster and two beloved granddaughters, Madison and Gianna Benoit, both of Webster. Besides his parents, Joe is predeceased by his sister, Marguerite Simmarano.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Monday, April 7, 2025 from 9:30-11 am followed by his funeral service at 11:00 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.
