Joseph M. Lapomardo “Joe Magic” 84, of Worcester died peacefully Monday July 30 2018 in the UMASS Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years Carol A. (Berberian) Lapomardo, two sons, Joseph G Lapomardo and Michael J. Lapomardo both of Worcester, two daughters Stephanie A. Lystila and her husband Michael of Leicester, and Karen Mitchell of Worcester. Joseph was the proud grandfather to Sienna Lapomardo, and Samantha Mitchell and her fiancé Troy Johnson. Joseph also leaves several Brothers and Sisters in Law, and many nephews and nieces. Joseph was predeceased by three brothers, John, Frank, and Michael Lapomardo.
Joseph was born in Worcester son of the late Gaetano and Josephine (Marzano) Lapomardo and has lived here all his life. He was a graduate of the Worcester Boys Trade School. Joe served his country proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the USS Vesole. Upon returning home Joe started working for the City of Worcester as a Building Inspector and held that position for 36 years before he retired. Joe, known to most as “Joe Magic” was one of Worcester’s Icons and was known for his funny sense of humor and of course his magical abilities. He could make anything from a few Ballons in a matter of minutes to the delight of the children.
Joseph was a fixture on the Comedy scene which he shared with his friend Anthony Simmarano, they were known as Simms and Mardo. They entertained on many cruise lines and night spots all over New England, they performed along with such stars as Danny Thomas, Dean Martin and many other well known performers at that time. He hosted many trips all over the World. Joe had a special gift of entertaining people and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Joseph was a life member of the Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St Ann, The Italian American Post #3, the American Legion Post # 201 East Side, and the Brown Square Civic Club. He was a deputy for the Massachusetts Boxing Association, and was a long time member of the Clowns of America Association. He loved watching the Red Sox and Patriots Games, but his most treasured times were when he was with his family.
Joseph’s funeral will be held on Friday August 3 from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation St with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30AM in the Church of Our Lady of Loreto 33 Massasoit Rd. Visiting hours to Celebrate and Honor Josephs life will be held from 4PM to 7PM on Thursday August 2, in the funeral home. Interment will be in St Johns Cemetery.
