Joseph J. Monfredo, 83 of Worcester, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023 in Fairlawn Hospital from ALS.
Joseph was born on August 25, 1939 in Worcester, a son of the late John F. and Frances Monfredo and where he was a resident all of his life. He graduated from Commerce High School and later continued his education at Worcester State College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and his master’s degree in education. Joseph enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country proudly as a platoon leader in basic training and was a recipient of the Solider of the Cycle Award and the Marksmanship Award. Upon his discharge, he entered the Army Reserves from 1962-1966 in communications core.
Joseph spent 37 years in Worcester Public Schools and 11 years as a principal for Burncoat Elementary School before his retirement in 2000. Throughout his career, he received numerous certificates of merit for his teaching and guidance in the public school system.
Joseph not only taught children day to day but was a baseball coach also. He was a baseball coach for 53 years as well as a football, basketball and soccer coach for various organizations including the East Side Babe Ruth League, Nelson Place School, Thorndyke Road School, Jesse Burkett Little League, West Side Babe Ruth League, Burncoat and Doherty High School. His love for sports, especially baseball, led him to coach various teams from 1961-1985 and then coached Bancroft School from 2004-2014.
His greatest love was his family, especially his grandchildren. Joseph loved spending time with them and never missed one of their sporting events. Joseph was their biggest fan and even when he became ill, he found a way to make it there to cheer them on like he always did. Joseph also enjoyed traveling with his wife Judy and an occasional round of golf.
