Joseph F. Penny, Sr.

Joseph Francis Penny, Sr., 89 of Whitinsville, passed away with loved ones gathered at his side, Saturday, November 4th, 2023.

Joe was born in Worcester, the one of nine sons of Samuel and Harriet (Sullivan) Penny.  He graduated from Grafton Street School and Worcester Boys Trade, as a welder.  Joe worked for New England Power/ National Grid for over 38 years as a Forman/welder, taking great pride in how he provided for his family, before retiring.  

Joe is survived by, his beloved three children, Karen Penny of Whitinsville, Joseph F. Penny, Jr. and his wife Diana of Auburn, and James Penny of Worcester, three grandchildren, Michael Penny of Auburn, Jessica Weissman and her husband David of Rochdale and Kasey Penny of Leicester; 4 great grandchildren, Carmine Penny,  Analee Montoya, Jacob and Samantha Weissman; A brother, David Penny and his wife Helen (Valinsky) Penny; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.  Joe is predeceased by his wife, Florence V. (Norrman)Penny, seven brothers, Walter, Franis, Robert, Vincent, Frederick, William, and Samuel Penny, and his companion for many years Judith Carlson.

Joe was quite and athlete; He played football at Boys Trade as a running back and as a longtime member of the YMCA in Worcester, he was ranked second in the State of Massachusetts as a handball player for over 20 years.  Joe moved to Delray Beach, Florida following retirement with his dear friend Judy. He loved swimming, eating out, and listening to Country music.  Although an official Floridian, this would not deter Joe from cheering his favorite sports teams, the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.  He was a kind, and gentle man who loved life and was loved by many.  He will be greatly missed.   

A period of calling hours will be held Friday, November 10th from 10 am to 11:30 am followed by his funeral service, in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St.  Burial will follow in St John Cemetery.
