Juana E. (Cortez Bilbao) Pignataro, 79 of Worcester, a dedicated wife, mother, and educator passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021, after a brief period of declining health.
Juana was born and raised in Calama, Chile, the daughter of Ernesto and Justina (Bilbao) Cortez. In 1964, during a port of call of the U.S. Coast Guard Ice Breaker East Wind to Valparaíso, Chile, Juana met James F. Pignataro. Juana and James corresponded for two years before they married in 1966. James brought his young bride to the U.S. and Juana spent the next 55 years dedicated to family, faith, heritage, and service.
In Chile, Juana was a dental assistant before she immigrated to the U.S. Here, she enrolled in New Hampshire College, graduating with a degree of Bachelor of Sciences in Human Services. Juana then accepted a position with the City of Worcester School department working as a social worker and a teachers’ aide before becoming a Bilingual teacher. Educating young students in both Spanish and English was a position she enjoyed. She worked for the City of Worcester for over 20 years before retiring.
Juana is survived by the “Love of her life” James F. Pignataro; her two daughters, Margarita and Juanita Pignataro of Worcester; a brother Ernesto Cortez in Chile; a sister, Elba Cortez of Worcester; Many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends here in Worcester, across the States and Chile. A brother Luis predeceased her.
Juana’s faith and heritage were so important to her. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church and a cofounder of a youth dance group called El Condor. An accomplished artist, Juana’s paintings were displayed in art exhibits in Worcester. Juana’s most satisfying job was that of a wife and mother. James and her girls were her pride and inspiration. The greatest moments in her life were those spent with them, enjoying their company, interests, and accomplishments. Her caring soul, bright smile and huge heart will never be forgotten.
