Kenneth R. Franz, 76, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, July 3, 2018.
He was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, the son of Clarence J. and Rita M. (Bertele) Franz on January 21,1942. He graduated from Archbishop Hogan High School and worked as a photographer for Akron University. Wanting more adventure, he served in the US Army as a photographer with the Special Forces and was assigned to the John F. Kennedy Center for Special Warfare. After being honorably discharged he moved to Massachusetts to work at Tech Films where he honed his skills as an award-winning cinematographer and animator. After leaving Tech Films he became Chief Medical Photographer at Worcester City Hospital, until it closed. He then opened his own business and continued in medical photography. The last few years of his career, before retirement, were spent working for the Boylston Highway Department. Ken always felt very fortunate to have a career doing exactly what he loved doing - working with film.
He was a member of the Worcester Pistol and Rifle Club and the Bothbay Region Fish and Game Association. He enjoyed sailing and being on the ocean, breathing the salty air. He always had a project going in MA or ME and was always busy doing something constructive and fun. His kindness to others, his willingness to lend a helping hand when needed, and his quick wit will be missed by his family and his many friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Charlene C. Franz, a sister, Lynda O'Neil and her husband Kevin of Akron, Ohio, 2 nieces, Cathy Blate and Sue Markowitz of Ohio, 2 nephews, Patrick O'Neil of Washington, and Brian O'Neil of Australia. He also leaves many cousins, family and friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Will Franz in 2011.
As he requested there will be no calling hours but there will be a Mass celebrated on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at 11:00 at St. Mary of the Hills Church, 630 Cross Street, Boylston, MA. Burial will be private.
We would like to thank the VNA Hospice and Dr. David Shepro for their diligence and compassion in managing Ken's care this past month.
