M Barbara Smith

March 25, 1933 — November 13, 2021

Barbara Smith of Worcester, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at Beaumont Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of Westborough, Massachusetts.

Four brothers, Michael J., William V., Martin J, and Francis P. Smith all predeceased her.  She leaves many caring, loving nieces and nephews.  She was born in Worcester, the only daughter of the late, William and Nora (Tarpey) Smith.  She graduated from St. Peter’s High School in 1951 and attended Quinsigamond Community College.

Barbara was an executive secretary for local banks and worked at the law firm of June, Fletcher & Whipple for fifteen years.  She worked twenty-two years for State Mutual Life Assurance Company of America (now The Hanover Group), retiring in 1996 as senior legal analyst and assistant corporate secretary.  She served as a volunteer for the Literacy Volunteers of Great Worcester, Massachusetts Association for the Blind, the Children’s Garden at the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Massachusetts, Inc., the Rose Monahan Hospice Residence on Coes Pond, NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans, and UMass Memorial Hospital.

At Barbara’s request, there are no calling hours.  After cremation, a Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 1, at Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Turnpike (route 9 east), Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

The family has entrusted Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel.

Memorial donations in Barbara’s name may be made to NEADS/Dog’s for Deaf and Disabled Americans or Pat Brody Shelter for Cats.
