Major J. Berry III, 67, of Worcester, MA passed away at UMass Hospital after a long illness on January 5, 2024. Major was born in the city of Worcester on October 26, 1956, to the late Major J. Berry Jr. and Jimmie Sue (Toney) Berry, both of Alabama. Major graduated from Doherty Memorial High School where he was an all-American athlete. Major was predeceased by his father, Major J. Berry Jr. He is survived by his adored daughter, Yolanda R. Garrett and loving son, Major J. Berry IV; his beloved mother, Jimmie Sue (Toney) Castro and stepfather Raul Castro; his cherished grandchildren, Marcelle, Shauntaisa, Martisha, and Marty Silvera, Shavar Buchanan, Tayjean and Sanai Berry and Zachariah Martinez. His three great grandchildren Denazha Buchana, Christian Gamble and Epic May. His Best friend Patricia Warren of over 50 years. His three brothers, Larry, Dwain, and Mark Berry all of Worcester and two sisters, Ella Berry of Worcester, and Pamala (Berry) Penny of Auburn, AL. Major also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, an aunt and uncle, cousins, and many friends. Major was an avid sports fan and loved playing poker. He was thrilled that his grandson is playing Division I college basketball and conversed with him often about the game he loved. Major adored his children and played a major part in his grandchildren’s lives. Major was always full of love, jokes, and laughter. His presence always lit up the room and it was never a dull moment when he was around. Calling ours will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, from 10:00am to 11:30am with a Funeral Service starting at 11:30am at MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPLE, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Interment will immediately follow at Hope Cemetery, Worcester. Major was kind, genuine, loving and he will be deeply missed by those who called him son, dad, granddaddy, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend.
