Mathew R. “Matty” DiStefano, Sr., 83, of Worcester, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 16, 2021 with family at his side. He was also fondly known as Mr. D, Bob, and Uncle Bob.
Matty leaves his beloved wife of 29 years, Elizabeth L. “Betty” (Foisy) DiStefano; three sons and two daughters: Jerilyn F. Ward and her husband, Michael, of Maine; Mathew R. DiStefano, Jr. of Millbury; Mark S. DiStefano of Auburn; John Joe DiStefano of Worcester; and Seanna M. DiStefano and her partner, Bobbie-Jo Janda of New Hampshire; a daughter-in-law, Nancy DiStefano of Millbury; nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and step-children. He is predeceased by 2 brothers and 6 sisters; Salvatore DiStefano, Paul DiStefano, Santina Ferraro, Josephine Robillard, Millie Robillard, Grace Ciccone, Lillian DiGeronimo and Josephine Prentiss. He was also predeceased by his beloved dogs, Dino, and Luigi.
Matty was born in Worcester, a son of the late Salvatore and Maria J. (Principe) DiStefano and was a graduate from Commerce High School. Matty worked as a plant manager at Worcester Press Aluminum for twenty years and he was also VP of Sales at Dana Corporations. Towards the end of his career, he worked at OTC. After early retirement, Matty enjoyed bartending at the 99 Pub on Millbury Street in Worcester where he made many friendships. He was a member of the American Legion Post 435 and Sacred Heart Church. When his sons were young, Matty loved spending time with them by coaching and serving as president of the Vernon Hill Little League. In later years, he was also proud to coach his sons and others on the 99 Pub softball team. Matty loved sunshine and a good, cold beer whether it was on his deck in Worcester or at his home in Florida. He had a passion for karaoke and enjoying life.
Calling hours will be held from 2 until 5 pm on Sunday, April 25, 2021 in the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Monday, April 26, 2021 in Sacred Heart-St. Catherine of Sweden Church, 600 Cambridge St., Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester.
