Michael P. Martin

December 13, 1945 — August 31, 2019

Michael P. Martin, 73, of Rutland, a devoted father, was escorted by angels to his eternal home in Heaven; from his home here that he built himself for his family; he passed on Saturday, August 31, 2019.  The closing of his final chapter here on Earth, came after fighting several illnesses bravely and with the tenacity indicative of his nickname “The Bull”.

Mike leaves his devoted family including his four children, Michael C. Martin and Kelly L. Martin, with whom he lived, Jami L. Martin Sokos and her husband Dean of Paxton, and Travis P. Martin of Worcester; three adoring grandchildren, Jordyn A. Martin, Amanda and Gianna Sokos; a brother, Henry C. Martin, Jr. of Worcester; a nephew, and many good friends.  He was predeceased by his brother, Christopher T. Martin.  Mike was born in Worcester, son of the late, Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Martin, Sr. and Dora C. (Theodore) Martin.

Mike was dedicated to his children and grandchildren, and he will be remembered as the greatest, most handsome dad with big beautiful green eyes.  A Dad that would do anything for his family and showered them with love.

Mike worked for many years at Automatic Rolls Company in Auburn, where he retired as Transportation Supervisor.  He was proud to be a Teamster and was a member the Teamsters, Local 170, where he was a union steward and was a CDL instructor, helping and mentoring members working to achieve their Class A License.

He was an Elvis Presley aficionado, collecting memorabilia, listening to his music, and proudly spoke of attending five Elvis concerts.  He loved Western movies, 50’s and doo-wop music, and enjoyed “Cruisin Fridays” in his 1946 Chevy pick-up or his 1954 Ford Crestline Victoria; bringing back fond memories of his friends at D & B Autobody Shop, Speedy’s Drive-in, the Anchor Lounge, the Driftwood, and Old McDonald’s.

He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and was quick with many a “one liner”.  He possessed a natural ability to socialize with anyone and he would often mesmerize any sports enthusiast with his statistician like knowledge of sports, including boxing, baseball, football, and racing.

Mike was a strong supporter of the United States Military, law enforcement, and the patriotic freedoms of this country, and he renders a final salute to all those in uniform.

Mike and his family are thankful to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers on the sixth floor at UMass on Lake Avenue and to Beacon of Hope Hospice and Gina Boisse, RN, for their compassion and caring.

Calling Hours will be on Wednesday morning, September 4, from 8 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester; followed by a procession departing at 10:40 a.m. for an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Loreto Church, 33 Massasoit Road, Worcester.  Interment will follow in Saint John’s Cemetery, Worcester

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org or to Sweet Pea Animal Shelter, 1090 Pleasant St, Paxton, MA 01612.

Remembering how Mike always signed a card to his children…

Love you, all day, everyday, all my life-Love Dad.
