Monica H. (O’Brien) Abdella, 75, a lifelong Worcester resident passed away unexpectedly in her sleep at home, Friday, November 8, 2024.
Monica was born in Worcester, the daughter of John and Jean (Carpenter) O’Brien. Raised on Vernon Hill, Monica graduated from South High School and earned her bachelors degree Magna Cum Laude proudly from Assumption University, after 13 years in the continuing education program, taking evening courses while raising her sons. Monica then worked for the University for over 20 years in the food service department, assisting students with designing their food plans.
She is survived by the “Love of her life” and husband for 52 years, the Honorable Charles A. Abdella, Sr.; two sons she was so proud of and loved dearly, Charles A. Abdella, Jr. and his wife Kerry of Boylston, The Honorable Andrew J. Abdella and his wife Rebecca of Paxton; four grandchildren she adored, Zoe, Jasmin, Molly, and Isabel. Monica is also survived by two sisters, Mary Lou Anderson of Worcester and Margaret Gaucher of Holden; a sister-in-law, Anne Abdella of Worcester; as well as her cousins, nieces, and many friends.
A true and dedicated family matriarch, Monica loved to read and write, notably working one year as a reporter. She always said, “she was born to be a mother”, and possessed incredible maternal instincts, as anyone who knew her would truly testify. If you had a challenge in your life, Monica would send you a card, make a call, or check in. She devoted her life to her family, adored her husband, her sons, daughters-in-law, and above all, her four granddaughters, who were simply her entire world. She loved and enjoyed Cape Cod, where she vacationed with her sons when they were growing up, and again with her granddaughters as they grew up.
Friends and family are invited to gather for calling hours, Monday, November 11th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Her funeral will be held Tuesday, November 12th from the funeral home departing at 11:30 am in procession to St Mary Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury where her celebration of Christian burial Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery.
