Norman A. Vokes, 88 of West Boylston, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at UMass Medical Center.
Norman was born in Worcester, a son of the late Harry W. Vokes from Tralee- County Kerry Ireland and Ethel H. (Eilertsen) Vokes of Worcester Ma. Norman graduated from Worcester Boys Trade and went into the Naval Reserves. Norman started his career as a cabinet maker and later an iron worker. He settled into a long-time career joining the Carpentry Union, Local 107, working his way up to treasurer and business agent before his retirement. Norman was a board member for both the New England Carpenters training Center in Millbury and the First Trade Union Savings Bank. In his free time, Norman enjoyed fishing and hunting, including regular deep sea fishing trips on Cape Cod and Salmon Fishing in Upstate New York. You could find Norman bird hunting in Petersham, Ma. and deer hunting in Rangely Maine. Norman was most passionate about golf, he was a member at Holden, Sterling and Wachusett Country Clubs spending his winters in Florida on the Links, his golf resume includes 2, hole in-one, many Eagles, but he was always chasing the Albatross.
Norman also had a love for dancing which is what brought Norman and Carol together. They met at a dance hall in Westborough, the Fox Lounge and from there Norman and Carol enjoyed many nights dancing and dining with friends.
Norman’s craft in carpentry brought him from California to Cape Cod where he built & remodeled many properties, eventually building the family vacation home in Eastham, Ma in 1978. Norman and his Family enjoyed many summers in Eastham, he took pleasure in cooking for his family, dining on steamers, lobsters, and his famous meatballs, kicking his feet up in the recliner and watching all Boston sports, especially the Red Sox was how he enjoyed his down time.
Norman is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Carol J. (Juckins) Vokes; three sons, Barry Dalton and his wife Sandy of Port St. Lucy, FL., Darren L. Vokes and his wife Janet of Medway and Brian Vokes and his wife Maria of Worcester; a sister, Carol Erikson, and her husband Les of Brewster; five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, many nieces, and nephews. He is predeceased by a son, Craig Dalton, a brother, Ronald Vokes and a sister, Elizabeth Mellon.
Relatives and friends are invited to a period of calling hours on Monday, August 21, 2023, from 10-11 am with his funeral service immediately following at 11:00 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester.
