Orlando Federico, 87, of New London CT, formerly of Worcester passed away peacefully Sunday, February 16, 2020.
Orlando was born in Sulmona, Aquila, Italy on April 24, 1932, one of four children of Panfilo “Benny” and Filomena Federico. As a young child, Orlando immigrated with his family to Worcester where he earned his degree in Welding from Worcester Boys Trade. He then served four years in the U.S. Air Force and returned to Worcester upon discharge. He then accepted a position with the Electric Boat Company, contracted to the U.S. Government where he worked as a welder constructing submarines in New London Connecticut before retiring. For over 37 years, Orlando had a women Carmella “Millie” Bletcher and her family in his life.
Orlando leaves two nieces, Linda Baker and her husband Michael of Worcester and Filomena Federico in Italy. Having no children of his own, Millie’s family lovingly welcomed him into their family, involved him in every event and celebration; Her daughters, Donna Napolitano, Deb Drakos and her husband Andrew, Susan Smithson, Dawn Wells and her husband Joe: their Children he considered grandchildren, Danielle Napolitano, Andrew, Keith, and Chris Drakos, Rachel Smithson, Nick and Taylor Wells. Orlando was blessed to have two great families. He was predeceased by the “Love of his Life,” Carmella “Millie” Bletcher with whom he enjoyed 37 years of love and devotion; two brothers, Donato and Ugolino Federico and a sister, Theresa Federico.
Orlando enjoyed vacationing in Maine, bowling, dancing, music, casino’s and playing cards especially poker. Accomplished in music, Orlando played the accordion, keyboards and the Harmonica. As most Italians, Orlando enjoyed gardening with his flowers and especially his tomatoes and mushrooms.
Funeral services with military honors for Orlando will be held Sunday, March 1st at 4 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street. A period of calling hours will be held Sunday, March 1st from 2 pm to the start of the service. Burial will be held at a later date in St. John Cemetery.
