Retired Worcester Firefighter Paul M. Bastardo, 67 of Worcester, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center surrounded by his devoted family after a long battle with cancer.
Paul was born in Worcester, a son of the late Frank M. and Irene M. (O’Clatis) Bastardo. He was a graduate of Doherty Memorial High School and has been a resident of Worcester all his life. He worked as a firefighter for the City of Worcester Fire Department for 38 years, retiring in 2014. Paul, affectionately known by his fellow brothers as “Aldo,” was appointed to the fire department in April of 1977 and worked a majority of his career on Rescue-1. He also worked on Engine 1, Engine 3, and Car 3.
Paul proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1973-1976.
Paul loved spending time with his family. He could often be found taking walks or listening to music, especially his favorite Allman Brothers. A huge history buff, Paul enjoyed sharing his knowledge and passion for both Worcester and for Firefighting. Paul was also a devout Christian, finding comfort in his faith throughout his journey.
Paul is survived by his son, Timothy Bastardo and his fiancé Lis Beasley; his daughter, Nicole Bastardo and her partner Ben Gilbert; his former spouse and mother of his children, Shirley J. Garrity; his brother, Michael Bastardo and his wife Sue. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by a sister, Joan Forjette. He also leaves many loved nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Paul will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at 11:00 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. Burial with military funeral honors will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, April 12 from 4-7 pm in the funeral home. At Paul’s request, flowers are omitted and he has requested that you donate in his memory to: Worcester Fireman’s Relief Association, 141 Grove St., Worcester, MA, 01605.
