Retired Worcester Police Sgt, Arthur J. Smick, 76, a lifelong Worcester resident passed away unexpectedly at home, Wednesday, October 30th 2024
Arthur was born in Worcester, his mother was the late, Mary B. Smick. He was raised in Worcester, graduated from Worcester Boys Trade, and earned his associates degree in Criminal Justice from Quinsigamond Community College. Arthur first worked for the Jamesbury Corporation, before accepting an appointment to the Worcester Police Department, serving the citizens of Worcester for over 30 years before retiring in 2002 with the rank of sergeant. On October 13th1985, Arthur married the “Love of his Life” Sharon Gerardi and lived the next 39 years, a life of family, faith, and devotion.
Arthur is survived by his wife Sharon Gerardi; two sons, Todd Smick and his fiancé Janice of Medford, NJ; Worcester Fire Department Captain Michael Smick and his wife Susan Tarallo of Holden; he cherished six grandchildren, Patrick Robert and his wife Danielle, Amanda, Andrew, Trevor, Sierra, and Haley Smick; and three great grandchildren; Beau, Cole, and Ava. His extended family members include, brothers and sisters in law, who were so close to him, Sheila Gerardi and her husband Joe Vacca, Kevin, Karen, and Kim Gerardi, Robin Cano and her husband Steve, Marybeth Friel and her husband David; his godfather, Harry Merty; a nephew and hunting partner, Jay; many other nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends in Worcester County and beyond. In addition to his mother, Roland (Tex), Lena, Mark, Ronnie Gerardi and Theresa Aiello predeceased him.
A true family man and friend, Arthur cherished the time he spent with Sharon, his sons, family and friends. He enjoyed riding his Kawasaki 1000 motorcycle when he was younger. He enjoyed fishing and especially loved teaching Todd, Mike, Patrick and Jay how to navigate the outdoors and deer hunt. Some of his fondest memories were hunting with them in the Berkshires and Connecticut. He also loved coaching and watching his sons play sports. He took thousands of pictures and video taped many of their games. Art was also an avid golfer, he enjoyed, playing with friends in the Police Golf league at Heritage Country Club, or with his sons, friends or other family members. Arthur loved cats, his favorite being Felix. Arthur was a member of the NRA, Worcester Police Officials Union, the Worcester Police Credit Union and Relief association.
Friends and relatives are invited to gather for calling hours, Wednesday, November 6th from 4 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral service will be held Thursday, November 7th at 11:00 am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in his name can be made to the Worcester Police Relief association, 9-11 Lincoln Street Worcester or the Worcester Animal Rescue League, Holden Street, Worcester.
