Dick was an avid reader. He loved books and loved spending many an evening with a hardcover book in his hands. Dick had a life-long passion and enthusiasm for the ocean and boating that began in early years working on Nantucket. For Dick, boating was an unforgettable adventure.

He loved walking the docks in Mystic, CT, talking to people about their mutual interests. He was a skilled navigator, had a keen sense of each vessel, enjoyed plotting routes with charts, and recording the ebb and flow of tides. Upon retirement, Dick obtained his U.S. Merchant Marine Officer Master’s License. He had many favorite ports including Montauk, Long Island, NY, Newport, RI but homeport for Dick was Mystic where he spent many years. His co-pilots on the ocean were his dog, Tasha, his parrot, Skye King, his young daughter, Christie and always, his wife, Diane.
