Richard D. Sanderson, 76, of Worcester, a long-time educator, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2022, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by loving family.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of nearly fifty-eight years, Pamela J. (Dumas) Sanderson; their children, Kathleen M. Pichette and her husband John, and Stephen R. Sanderson, all of Worcester; five grandchildren, Allison, Kristen, and Lauren Pichette, Ryan and Eric Sanderson; brothers and sisters in law, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Marcia. Richard was born in Worcester, son of the late, Allyn Manley and Mary Rita (Butler) Sanderson, and grew up in Oxford, later moving to Worcester with Pam to raise their family.
Richard was an educator and dedicated his professional life to the betterment of future generations through education. He graduated from Worcester State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, as well as two master’s degrees, one in education administration and the second in guidance.
Richard retired in 2002 as Principal of Clara Barton Elementary School, having previously been Principal at North West Elementary and Priest Street Pre School, both in Leominster. He also made many long-time friends and colleagues, when he was Curriculum Coordinator for the Grafton Public School Department in the early 1980’s.
Richard and Pamela enjoyed many years of retirement and were blessed to spend summers at their homes at Nantasket Beach and Fort Meyers, Florida, where they were Season Ticket holders for The Boston Red Sox, spring training season. They always had an open door for family and friends to visit and this brought him tremendous happiness. Richard or “Mr. Mayor”, as his family would call him, enjoyed meeting people and was quick to pick up a conversation wherever he was. He loved to golf and watch the Red Sox and Patriots; and was a communicant of Our Lady of The Rosary Church.
Relatives and friends are invited gather with Richard’s family for Calling Hours on Wednesday, March 30, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. His Funeral will be on Thursday, departing the funeral home at 9:40 a.m., in procession to a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of The Rosary Church, 25 Fales Street, Worcester.
