Robert F. "Sonny" Rano

Robert F. “Sonny” Rano, 88 of South Dennis formerly of Worcester passed away at home on Wednesday, November 27, 2019.

Sonny was born in Worcester, a son of the late Peter and Sophie (Mastrapasqua) Rano. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1948 where he was on the USS Worcester until being discharged in 1952. During his time in the service he was the proud recipient of China Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Naval Occupation Medal. Sonny worked as a correctional officer for the Worcester House of Corrections as an automotive facilitator for 5 years and later as a District Court Officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Worcester District Trial Court for 10 years retiring in 1996. He previously was the owner of Sonny’s Auto Service for 30 years.

Sonny was a member of the former St. Margaret Mary’s Church, the Dennis Police Association and the Massachusetts Retiree’s Association. He enjoyed watching football, going to the beaches of Cape Cod where he would go clamming, being in the sun and attending his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s games.

Sonny’s wife of 63 years, Congetta J. “Connie” (Zollo) Rano passed away on September 7, 2014. He is survived by his son, Robert F. Rano, Jr. and his wife Carol; his daughter, Sophie L. Cesnickas all of Worcester; four grandchildren, Jaime Cesnickas-Doane and her husband William “Ben” Doane of Holden, Andrew Cesnickas and his wife Erin of Charlton, Michael Rano and his wife Shanique of Apex, NC and Peter Rano and his wife Megan of Holden; nine great grandchildren. He is predeceased by four brothers, Carl, John Vito and Flavio Rano and two sisters, Josephine Daboul and Isabel “Lisa” Curly.

His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 2, 2019 at 11:30 am in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd., Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester. Relatives and friends are invited to a visit with Sonny’s family on Monday, December 2, 2019 from 9-11 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester prior to departure for his funeral Mass.
