Roger Harrington Whitman

Roger Harrington Whitman, aged 93, of Sun City Center, FL, formerly of Worcester, West Boylston, Leicester, and Ruskin, FL, passed away September 9, 2024.

Born in Worcester, MA on April 14, 1931, to Howard and Alice (Harrington) Whitman, he was raised in Worcester. Roger graduated from South High School. He obtained his embalming license, worked in the funeral business for many years, and served as the Superintendent of Mt Vernon Cemetery in West Boylston. In West Boylston, he was on the Board of Health, served as Animal and Food Inspector, and worked as a school crossing guard for many years.

Renowned for his kind heart, generosity, and hard work, Roger was always there if you needed him. He was a loyal friend to many. He had a passion for collecting Hot Wheels cars, coins, stamps, historical documents and antique toys. He was a magician, performing at events and children’s parties. He loved to golf and was a die-hard Red Sox fan, even after moving to Florida. He was a snowbird for many years, until permanently moving to Florida in 1995.

Sadly, in addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara (Berryman) Baumgartner, and his brothers Bradford and Douglas Whitman,

Roger is survived by his loving children, Lynne Pelto (Mauri) of Ashburnham; Lawrence H. Whitman (Laurie) of North Brookfield; his sister Priscilla Collins (George) of Holiday FL; his 3 grandchildren; Keith Benoit (Jaqueline); Caryn Mantzavinos (Spiros); Lawrence J. Whitman (Chelsae); and 5 great grandchildren Emmy, Elliott, and Evelyn Benoit, Everett and Brooks Mantzavinos. 

A Graveside service will be held at Hope Cemetery in Worcester, MA on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Family and friends are invited to attend, but if unable, the family would appreciate a story, photo or memory shared.
