Samuel Francis Penny Jr, 90, of Worcester, MA died on Monday July 4, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Carol (McWey) Penny and his three beloved children, Susan, Samuel III, and Michael Penny. He also leaves two brothers, David Penny and his wife Helen (Valinski) and Joseph Penny, and brothers-in -law Francs E. McWey and Michael T. McWey. Also surviving are granddaughters Kathleen, Carolyn, and Megan, as well as many nieces and nephews. Six brothers predeceased him: Walter, Francis, Robert, Vincent, Frederick and William.
Born in Worcester to the late Samuel and Harriet (Sullivan) Penny, he was a graduate of Grafton Street School and Worcester Boys Trade. Sam joined the United States Navy, where he was able to serve the country and see the world. He was a champion swimmer and a talented football player before his injury in 1953. Sam competed in numerous National Veteran Wheelchair Games, traveling across the country and collecting many gold medals in archery, billiards, and bowling. He was a member of the Grafton Hill American Legion Post and a lifelong parishioner of St. Stephens Parish in Worcester. He enjoyed playing pool, watching the Red Sox and Patriots and cooking for his family. Sam’s deep love for his family, especially his mother, wife, children and grandchildren, was most important to him. He is remembered by many for his infectious spirit, quick wit, unfailing generosity, and his famous Italian cooking.
His family is especially grateful to the nursing staff and medical team at the West Roxbury Veterans Hospital, as well as the medical team in Building 8 at the Brockton Campus, for their exemplary care. He will be sadly missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 9 at 10:00 AM at St. Stephen’s Parish, 16 Hamilton St, Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester. There will be no calling hours.
