October 4, 1927 — November 10, 2020

Victoria A. “Vickie” Dumphy,

"A Mother to All"

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of another life from the “Greatest Generation.” Our beautiful mother, Vickie, always 39+, passed away peacefully under the wonderful care at UMASS Memorial Hospital West 1 on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. Her beloved husband of forty years, Raymond L. Dumphy, predeceased her in 1984. Vickie was born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1927. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Julia (Farrow) Canal. Her sister Gloria Canal, predeceased her in 1992. Vickie leaves behind her children, beloved son, Edward R. Dumphy and his wife Patricia of Worcester, her daughter, Karen A. Calamare and her husband James of North Brookfield, a daughter, Maureen Powers-Frongillo and her husband Ronaldo “Butch” of Millbury,  a son, Brien Keith of Webster, and her youngest daughter, Marianne Boucher and her husband Richard of Worcester and their family with whom she lived for twenty years. When they were no longer able to provide the care she needed, the Christopher House’s Belmont Unit of Worcester graciously took over… a home away from home.

Nana Vickie was a proud fifth generation Great-Great Nana. Leaving 20 grandchildren and their spouses; Tara, Heather, Eddy, Gina, Michael, Angela, Anthony, Patrick, Shane, Kerri-Lynn, Stephanie, Peter, Whitney, Brianna-Rae, Travis, Taylor-Victoria, Lexie-Paige, Matthewson “Mattie” and Spencer. Sadly a grandson, Richard Paquette, passed in 2015. She leaves 28 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Her most treasured times were spent with them, most importantly teaching them their faith.  She also leaves behind a brother-in-law, Leo Dumphy and his wife Barbara of Jacksonville, NC.

She leaves behind many special nieces and nephews, especially Kevin Dumphy and his wife Mia of Chandler, AZ. Sheila Desourdis and her husband Dennis of Holland, MA. Her two best friends, also known as “The Golden Girls,” Evelyn (Evie) Rivet and Regina Gahan of Worcester. She also leaves five God-children, Deborah Sinkus, Theresa Lamica-Blanchard, Michelle Gagnon-Mason, Theresa Crocker and Louise Bigwood, all of Worcester.

Vickie grew up in Clinton, MA and later settled in Worcester with her husband and began their family where she embraced their Irish heritage. She was a graduate of Broms Academy- School of Hairdressing where she began her career at Robert Trinda’s and Jo-Anne’s Beauty Salon of Worcester. Although a hairdresser by trade, her true calling was working with children. Vickie served as a Mentor Parent for the Department of Social Services (DSS) as well as Comprehension Emergency Services (CES) of Massachusetts. Vickie and Ray never considered this a job but merely a love and compassion for children. She also leaves many beautiful children behind through the Mentor Program.

Vickie had many talents, especially in sewing. She often created and designed her own patterns in children’s clothing. Vickie’s creativity followed her into the kitchen where she enjoyed preparing meals for anyone who walked through her door. She was an avid reader, took peace in gardening and loved to paint. Vickie had the most fun when she was bowling, playing bingo and retreating to Foxwoods with “The Golden Girls.” In the “Good Old Days”, Vickie and Ray enjoyed riding their Indian Motorcycle up to Laconia, NH with friends and family. She enjoyed neighborhood block parties and was known as the “neighborhood mom.” Vickie took a big part in her community, particularly in St. Stephens Parish and School. She was a woman of great faith and attended Sunday Mass religiously. Vickie’s most treasured times were spent with her family during Sunday Brunches, family cookouts and vacations she took in Maine as well as Cape Cod. Vickie was a dedicated New England sports fan but a bigger fan of cheering on her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren during their sporting events. Vickie not only enjoyed watching sports she was extremely fond of the arts as well. She adored watching her family performances in music and dance.

Victoria had a radiant smile and infectious laugh. Her love, compassion and faith inspired all. She will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Vickie’s name to St. Stephens Parish of Worcester for “Save the Bell Tower.”
