Walter X McGrath

Walter X McGrath, a lifelong resident of Worcester, retired Worcester Police Officer and Korean War Army Veteran died peacefully at his home in Worcester on Friday September 17, 2021. Born in Worcester, Walter was the son of the late Walter F. and Winifred A (Flanagan) McGrath. 

Walter served not only his country by joining the Army during the Korean War, he served his home city for 35 years as a Worcester Police Sergeant finishing his career in the traffic division in 1992.  An avid sports fan, Walter enjoyed baseball, football, golf and loved any type of horse racing.  Many will fondly remember Walter, and his devotion to his family, his city, his country and fellow officers.  Walter loved spending the holidays with family at the homes of both his sister Barbara and nieces Pam and Paula.

Walter leaves his two sons, Barry McGrath, and John Carney (his devoted caretaker the past four years), one brother Justin McGrath, four grandchildren, Samantha Herman, Daniel McGrath, Patrick McGrath, and Rylee McGrath.  His beloved wife Jeanette B. (Ritacco) died in 2003, his one daughter Mary Ann Herman died in 2005. He was also predeceased by his two sisters Barbara Andresano, and Joan Kane.  

Funeral services will be held on Thursday September 23, 2021, at 11:30 am at the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL 370 Plantation St. Worcester, Ma 01605. Calling hours will be from 10-11:30. Burial with military honors will follow at St. John Cemetery in Worcester.
