Hugh Dignam

Hugh Dignam, 88, of Millbury, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, surrounded by loving family in the comfort of his home.  

Hugh is survived by his loving wife, with whom he would have celebrated thirty-two years of marriage on November 20, Jeanne (Carroll) Dignam; a daughter, Sarah Dignam; four sons, John Dignam and his wife Donna, Russ Dignam and his wife Kim, Jason, Dignam, and Ian Dignam and his wife Rebecca; a sister, Elinor McMenemy; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.  Sadly, he was predeceased by a daughter, Ceri Dignam in August 2005.  He was also predeceased by three sisters, Jean Driver, Elizabeth Griffin, and Beatrice Johnstone. Hugh was born in Coatbridge, Scotland, son of the late, John and Sarah B. (M’Ginnis) Dignam, he moved across the pond to the US in the 1960’s.

A builder from a young age, Hugh became a project manager for several large construction companies and worked throughout the U.S.  He later opened his own company and enjoyed years of working beside his sons.  Locally, he built RMV buildings, renovated Saint Brigid Church in Millbury, and was the Building Inspector for the Town of Millbury for many years.

Hugh enjoyed writing and was a talented poet.  He was a member of Saint Brigid Church and was proud of his service as a British Royal Marine Commando in the 1950’s.

His family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, December 9, from 11 a.m. until 12 Noon, when his Memorial Service will begin MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester.
