John R Sullivan, Sr.

John R.Sullivan ,Sr., 75 of Brewster, MA, formerly of Shrewsbury and Auburn, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 4th 2020, at St. Mary’s Health Care Center in Worcester.

John was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the oldest of four children of Robert J. and Lillian (Deskis) Sullivan. He graduated from Shrewsbury High School, class of 1962, and earned his degree in Liberal Arts from Quinsigamond Community College.  John worked as a self-employed Painting and Decorating Contractor for many years, he later worked as a Console Operator for UMass-Memorial Health, University Campus for over 27 years. Upon retiring, John moved to Brewster in 2005 where had lived until recently.

John is survived by three children, John R. Sullivan, Jr., of North Sutton , N.H., Michelle Sullivan of Shrewsbury, and Michael Sullivan and his wife Colleen of Auburn. He also leaves two sisters, Kathleen Grimley and her husband Brian of Boylston, Marlene Campbell and her husband John of Shrewsbury, and a brother David  Sullivan of California. He also leaves seven grandchildren, Aaron, Kellen, Hannah, Shawn, Erin, Patrick, and Ryan, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

John was a member of Friend of Bill and the Brewster Baptist Church. He served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard assigned to the 1st BN 181st  Infantry for more than 10 years. John also served as a Brewster Shellfish Warden. He loved playing Santa Claus for many organizations, tending to his garden and yard, and connecting with friends at the Cape.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to all the staff at St. Mary’s Health Care Center for the care they had given to John.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, funeral services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances in his name can be sent to the Brewster Baptist Church, 1848 Main St. #1827, Brewster, MA, 02631. The MERCANDANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
